iowa-in-1874-des-moines-davenport-dubuque
Iowa in 1874 - Des Moines, Davenport, Dubuque

This Iowa map comes from Asher & Adams' New Commercial, Topographical, and Statistical Atlas and Gazetteer of the United States, published in New York in 1874 — one of the first American atlases built specifically around railroad lines. This copy is the most complete late-1874 printing, electrotyped at the Franklin Type Foundry and bound in quarter leather with gilt-stamped boards. Iowa in this period had grown into one of the most densely rail-connected agricultural states in the country, its prairie soil turned almost entirely to farmland in the decades since Bradford's 1838 atlas first mapped it jointly with the newly separated Wisconsin Territory — by 1874 Iowa's own rail network, shown here, was carrying grain to market on a scale unimaginable in its territorial days.

The Mississippi River forms Iowa's eastern border on the map and the Missouri its western one, the same two rivers that had carried the state's earliest trade before the rail lines shown here took over; Des Moines, named state capital less than two decades earlier, anchors a state whose prairie soil was fast becoming synonymous with corn. The map is set against the atlas's dual Greenwich and Washington prime meridians and, true to the rest of the series, marks towns chiefly where they sit on or near a rail line rather than mapping settlement more broadly across the state's interior.

A good pick for an Iowa family, a Hawkeye State transplant, or a collector of Gilded Age railroad atlases. Our 1838 Bradford sheet shows Iowa in its very first year as a separate territory, mapped jointly with Wisconsin before either had its own settled identity or a mile of railroad track. This 1874 map instead documents Iowa as an established, rail-crossed farming state in its own right, a different picture of a different Iowa entirely. The print ships unframed and in multiple sizes.
