Both states endured some of the most severe economic disruption of Reconstruction anywhere in the South — their cotton economies, once built on enslaved labor, were being painfully reorganized around sharecropping, and Mississippi in particular remained under a fiercely contested Reconstruction government at the very moment this atlas went to print, with Arkansas bordering the map to the north.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLouisiana's parishes appear alongside Mississippi's counties on the same map, the two states' different colonial-era administrative systems sitting side by side, while Vicksburg — fought over for control of the Mississippi River during the war — shows up here rebuilt as a river-and-rail shipping point rather than a battlefield, even as New Orleans remained the region's dominant port. The map marks its townships and rail distances against the atlas's dual Greenwich and Washington prime meridians, with towns shown chiefly where they sit on or near a rail line, leaving large stretches of both states' interiors essentially blank on the page.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLouisiana and Mississippi families alike often gravitate toward this one, a Gulf Coast transplant, or a collector of Gilded Age railroad atlases.
