michigan-and-wisconsin-map-1858-regional-print-detroit-milwaukee-lansing
Michigan & Wisconsin Map 1858 Regional Print - Detroit, Milwaukee, Lansing

This map of Michigan and Wisconsin was drawn by G.W. Colton with text by Richard Swainson Fisher and published in 1858 in Colton's Illustrated Cabinet Atlas and Descriptive Geography, an atlas whose selling point was breadth as much as detail, hundreds of engraved illustrations covering the whole country at a scale a family could actually read. The sheet colors each state's counties individually within an ornamental floral border and carries two separate insets detailing the vicinities of Milwaukee and Detroit, all engraved by Davies and Roberts and George Russell and Co. Published only a decade or two after both states joined the Union, the map records a Great Lakes region still filling in with new counties as settlers moved west from New York and New England.

Michigan is shown with Detroit given its own inset here, already established as the state's largest city and its principal Great Lakes shipping point, with Lansing marked further west as the newer state capital. Wisconsin centers on Milwaukee, likewise detailed in a separate inset as its fast-growing lake port and center of German immigrant settlement, with Madison set inland as the state's own seat of government. Both states border the Great Lakes prominently, with Lake Michigan forming the shared boundary between them and Lake Superior marking Michigan's northern edge. The dense county subdivisions across southern Michigan and southern Wisconsin contrast sharply with the sparser, still-unorganized country further north in both states.

A Michigan or Wisconsin native curious about the state before its counties filled in has plenty to study here, and so does anyone with Great Lakes family roots or a Colton 1858 collection still missing the Upper Midwest. Detroit and Milwaukee each get their own inset here too, a detail worth knowing if your interest starts and ends with one lake city rather than the whole Upper Midwest. It is available unframed in a full range of sizes, from a compact study print to a larger statement piece.

https://www.themapvault.com/products/michigan-and-wisconsin-map-1858-regional-print-detroit-milwaukee-lansing
