This copy is the most complete late-1874 printing, electrotyped at the Franklin Type Foundry and bound in quarter leather with gilt-stamped boards, and includes a dedicated inset covering the northeastern portion of Lake County. Minnesota had been a state for sixteen years by this point, its northern frontier still recovering from the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, one of the bloodiest conflicts between American settlers and Native nations in the state's history, even as new rail lines pushed steadily into the territory the war had opened to further settlement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe map's Lake County inset covers ground that, only twelve years earlier, had been the epicenter of the U.S.-Dakota War fighting; by 1874 the same stretch of northern Minnesota was being platted for farms and timber claims instead, with rail lines pushing toward Duluth to open Lake Superior shipping to the wheat coming off those new farms. The main map marks townships and rail distances using the atlas's dual Greenwich and Washington prime meridians, showing towns chiefly where they sit on or near a rail line rather than mapping the state's interior more broadly — a choice that leaves much of Minnesota's northern lake country blank except for that one detailed inset.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMinnesota natives and North Star State transplants alike tend to want this one, as does a collector of Gilded Age railroad atlases.
