Both states had grown into established industrial centers of the postwar Midwest by this point — Ohio's canal-era head start from the 1830s had long since given way to a denser rail network, and Indiana had recovered from the near-bankruptcy its own overambitious 1830s canal program had caused, emerging instead as a manufacturing state in its own right. Franklin Type Foundry engraved and electrotyped the sheet, hand-colored with relief shown by hachures.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLake Michigan and Lake Erie both appear at the map's edges, bordering a densely railroaded stretch of the Midwest just a few years after the Civil War's end.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOhio and Indiana natives alike often gravitate toward this one, a Midwestern transplant, or a collector of Gilded Age railroad atlases.
