Rand McNally was known for producing practical reference atlases for a commercial audience, and this sheet follows that house style, using colored boundary outlines and hachured relief rather than decorative ornament to present its geography as clearly as possible. It covers a landscape newly divided in two: Oklahoma Territory, opened to settlement by the land runs that began in 1889, sits alongside the older Indian Territory to its east, together recording a region still fifteen years from Oklahoma statehood in 1907.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGuthrie, named the capital of the newly organized Oklahoma Territory in 1890, anchored the young territorial government just two years before this map was printed.
