The plate was prepared for Blaeu's English county atlas, first issued in the 1640s and kept in print through further editions over the following two decades, and its topographical content follows the earlier surveys of Christopher Saxton and John Speed, redrawn and re-engraved by Blaeu's Dutch craftsmen and finished in the workshop's characteristic hand colouring.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePenzance and St Ives are marked along Mount's Bay and the northern coast, Falmouth appears beside its deep natural harbour, and Padstow sits on the Camel estuary opposite the sands that made the river notoriously difficult to navigate. Land's End is traced at the peninsula's western tip, with the Isles of Scilly typically set apart in the corner of the sheet, while an ornamental cartouche, compass rose and scale bar fill the open sea, in the decorative style for which Blaeu's atlases were prized across Golden Age Europe.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAlongside the store's other Cornwall sheets, this Dutch-engraved plate offers a different lineage entirely, printed in Amsterdam rather than London and finished in a distinct decorative hand, making it a fitting gift for a collector wanting a genuinely different take on the county.
