Rather than a single geographical survey, Civitates Orbis Terrarum was compiled as a comprehensive visual record of the world's cities, city by city, and this Irish plate represents Ireland's contribution to that vast undertaking, capturing four of its most significant urban centres as they appeared at the start of the seventeenth century.
