This sheet, F2 in the surveyor's twenty-four-part plan of London, Westminster and Southwark, sits in the second row of the grid, east of the City walls, and shows the Tower itself standing guard over the river on the north bank while the south bank fills with wharves, warehouses and narrow lanes. Rocque and his engraver John Pine surveyed the capital street by street between the late 1730s and 1746, and this sheet captures a part of London that grew directly out of its river trade rather than around a church or a market square.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOn the north bank, the sheet marks the Tower of London with its moat and outer defences, together with the precinct of St Katherine's just beyond, still a liberty with its own hospital and church at this date, long before the enclosed dock that later took its name was cut through the site. Across the water, Shad Thames runs behind the wharves of Bermondsey, an area already known for tanning and leather working, its narrow riverside streets recorded here in the same fine detail Rocque gave to Westminster's grand squares.
