Unlike John Cary's earlier county plates, Lewis's maps were built specifically to accompany a reference text, so this Surrey sheet carries an unusually dense record of parishes, hamlets and settlement history, tracing the county's development from its earliest recorded origins through to the mid-Victorian period. By 1844 the railways were only beginning to reach into Surrey, and this map records the county still largely as a patchwork of ancient market towns and parishes on London's southern fringe, several decades before suburban growth would transform much of its northern half.

London itself, established by the Romans in 43 AD as Londinium and long the country's commercial and administrative capital, appears at the map's northern edge, the city whose growth would eventually reshape Surrey's own boundaries. Guildford, recorded from around 970 AD, was for a time home to a royal mint operating between the reigns of Alfred and William the Conqueror, while Woking, noted in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Wochinges and held directly by the king, appears as a comparatively modest settlement well before its later growth around the railway. Ewell, with origins before 775 AD, carries Roman remains including a villa and bath house, and Camberley, then part of the wilder heathland known as Bagshot Heath, was still associated with the highwaymen who had worked the area in the previous century. Reigate, home to a castle raised soon after the Norman Conquest, and the Thames-side towns of Staines and Sunbury, complete a sheet that stretches from ancient Roman remains to comparatively young Georgian coaching stops.

This map makes a thoughtful gift for anyone setting up home in Surrey for the first time and wanting a sense of the county's much longer story, from Roman Ewell through to Georgian Camberley. It is available unframed in a full range of sizes, so it can be scaled up for a stairwell or kept modest for a hallway console. Surrey buyers should note we carry two versions of the county alongside this one: John Cary's 1801 edition, drawn while Surrey was still entirely rural, and John Speed's much earlier 1611 map, so this 1844 Lewis sheet is best understood as the latest and most detailed of the three, capturing the county on the eve of its suburban transformation rather than before or during it.

https://www.themapvault.com/products/old-map-of-surrey-in-1844-by-samuel-lewis-guildford-woking-camberley
