pennsylvania-map-1845-state-print-harrisburg-philadelphia-pittsburgh
Pennsylvania Map 1845 State Print - Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh

Sidney Morse and Samuel Breese, working in New York, published this map of Pennsylvania in 1845 as part of Morse's North American Atlas, issued by Harper & Brothers across nine illustrated parts sold for twenty-five cents apiece. Morse and Breese pioneered the cerographic wax-engraving process used to print the map, and this particular sheet carries two insets, one detailing Philadelphia with Montgomery and Delaware counties and a second dedicated entirely to the state's coal region, a level of added detail not every sheet in the atlas received. Pennsylvania is shown here as one of the country's most industrially advanced states, its canal and early railroad network already extensive at a date when coal and iron were fast becoming the twin engines of its economy.

Harrisburg anchors the map as the state capital, a Susquehanna River town whose position gave it easy access to both the eastern cities and the interior coalfields. Philadelphia, covered in its own dedicated inset, appears as the state's dominant commercial center and one of the largest cities in the entire country at this date. The coal region inset singles out the anthracite fields of the northeast, already the source of the fuel remaking Pennsylvania's furnaces and, increasingly, the nation's railroads. Together the capital, the Philadelphia inset, and the coal-region inset sketch a state whose economy was shifting hard toward industry even as its canals still carried much of its trade.

A Pennsylvania family with roots in the old coal or canal towns will recognize plenty in this sheet's two insets, and it suits a collector drawn to the added cartographic effort those insets represent. The store also carries Pennsylvania grouped with Maryland, New Jersey, and Delaware in Cram's 1878 sheet, a four-state regional view quite different in scope from this dedicated state portrait with its own coal-region detail; this 1845 Morse map is the earliest Pennsylvania sheet in the collection. It's printed unframed and available in a range of sizes to fit whatever wall it's headed for.

https://www.themapvault.com/products/pennsylvania-map-1845-state-print-harrisburg-philadelphia-pittsburgh
