rhode-island-in-1797-providence-newport-warwick
Rhode Island in 1797 - Providence, Newport, Warwick

This map of Rhode Island was produced by the Hamburg cartographer Daniel Friedrich Sotzmann and published in 1797 as part of the Ebeling-Sotzmann Atlas von Nordamerika, prepared to accompany Christoph Daniel Ebeling's seven-volume geography and history of the United States. Sotzmann completed only ten of an intended eighteen state maps before the project was abandoned, drawing on American sources including Carey, Blodget, Belknap, and Howell, and this particular sheet was engraved by H. Kliewer as the largest-scale map in the entire series, finished in full hand color by county. It covers Rhode Island at the close of the eighteenth century, seven years after the state became the last of the original thirteen to ratify the Constitution, a small but commercially active corner of New England still finding its footing within the new federal union.

Providence appears as the state's leading town, already emerging as a center of shipping and manufacturing that would soon rival Boston in New England's commercial life. Newport is recorded on its own harbor, a once-dominant Atlantic port whose wharves had built fortunes in the colonial trade with the Caribbean and Europe before the Revolution reshaped its fortunes. Warwick is shown along the shores of Narragansett Bay, a smaller maritime town living in Providence's shadow, while Washington County is delineated as the state's rural southwestern district, given over to farmland rather than trade. Together these places sketch a state split between its bustling bay-front towns and the quieter agricultural county inland.

This map makes a fitting gift for anyone with family roots in Providence, Newport or the wider Narragansett Bay region, or for a collector drawn to the meticulous, rare cartography of the Ebeling-Sotzmann atlas. As one of only ten Sotzmann state maps ever completed, and reputedly the largest-scale sheet of the series, it holds particular appeal for collectors who prize scarcity alongside decorative quality. It is available unframed in a full range of sizes, from a compact study print to a larger statement piece.
