Drawn in 1923 and finished in full color at a scale of one to eight million, the sheet maps average summer temperatures for the months of June through August across the entire country, with a smaller inset recording the single highest temperature ever documented in each region up to that date. The atlas as a whole was compiled across the 1910s and 1920s, part of a systematic federal effort to give farmers and policymakers reliable climate data rather than anecdote.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Desert Southwest carries the warmest shading on the map, its summer averages running well above those found anywhere else in the country and its recorded extremes among the highest on the inset. The Gulf South and lower Mississippi Valley fall into the next band, hot and humid summers that shaped both the region's crops and its settlement patterns. The Pacific Northwest and the northern Rockies carry the coolest averages shown, their summers moderated by elevation and ocean proximity alike.
