This map of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, Dutch provinces, was published by Daniel Lizars of Edinburgh about 1831. It comes from The Edinburgh Geographical and Historical Atlas, issued by John Hamilton of Edinburgh, successor to Lizars, with Whittaker, Treacher & Co. of London and W. Curry, Jun. & Co. of Dublin. The sheet measures 39 by 46 centimeters and is a hand-colored engraving. The atlas holds 59 maps, and its title promises a sketch of the history of geography, a history of each continent, state and kingdom, and a tabular view of the principal mountain chains of the world. The engraving was carried out by the firms named in the imprint, including John Hamilton, W. Curry, Jun. & Co. and Whittaker, Treacher & Co., which gives the sheet a three-city publishing history.

The atlas was engraved on sixty-nine copper sheets and compiled, in its own words, from materials drawn from the newest and most authentic sources. The text was bound separately from the maps, so the sheet stands as a free-standing picture of its country. The title records a short-lived state, the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, which had been created after the Napoleonic wars and was breaking apart in 1830 and 1831. A map of that kingdom, drawn in an Edinburgh atlas of the period, shows how closely British publishers followed continental politics and how quickly their sheets became records of a vanished arrangement.

A collector of Scottish atlas engraving, a family with roots in the Netherlands, or a reader of the history of the Low Countries will find a distinguished gift here. TheMapVault's Burr map of 1831 shows the same kingdom through American eyes, whereas this Lizars sheet comes from the great Edinburgh atlas. Like every print in the collection, it ships unframed and is available in a full range of sizes, from a compact desk piece to a large-format statement print.
