This striking and scarce map of Sweden and Norway was published by Henry Teesdale of London in 1834. In addition to the many towns, rivers, islands, lakes and other hydrographical details that one would expect on such a map, it also notes the major roads of the two countries, which makes it unusually useful for anyone who wants to follow a journey across the peninsula. The catalog notes only minor toning at the centerfold. The sheet shows the two kingdoms, which were then joined under one crown, in the clear and reliable style of the best London commercial maps of the period. The sheet is a clean example of London commercial mapmaking in the 1830s, and the roads give it a practical character that sets it apart from many decorative maps.

Henry Teesdale lived from 1776 to 1856 and was a London-based map publisher. He was an early Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, elected in 1830. Teesdale had partnered with John Hordan and William Colling Hodson, but that arrangement dissolved in 1832, after which he worked on his own and from time to time with colleagues such as John Crane Dower, Christopher Greenwood and Josiah Henshall. He published a variety of atlases and separately issued maps, and his business was quite successful, so that he registered as a partner in the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1845.

A collector of English road maps, a family with roots in Sweden or Norway, or a traveler who likes to trace routes will find a practical gift here. TheMapVault's Colton lithograph of the same lands comes from New York, whereas this Teesdale sheet is a London map that marks the highways. Like every print in the collection, it ships unframed and is available in a full range of sizes, from a compact desk piece to a large-format statement print. It would suit a study, a hall or a library.
