The Sydney Harbour Trust issued this bird's-eye view of the Port of Sydney in 1919, an expansive administrative view of Port Jackson that documents the maritime and urban infrastructure around it just after the First World War. The Trust had been set up in 1901 after an outbreak of bubonic plague to modernize a chaotic waterfront, and by 1919 it had transformed the harbor's commercial capabilities under its Engineer-in-Chief H. D. Walsh and Principal Assistant Engineer W. E. Adams, whose facsimile signatures authenticate the cartouche. The sheet is a lithograph that maps urban density through red shading, with green spaces and yellow-toned suburbs spreading toward Parramatta. It is a bird's-eye view of a city and its port, made in a year when Sydney's shipping trade was booming.
The view details the network of rail lines, dredged shipping channels and harbor facilities that fed the port, and it notes the ongoing dredging of the Western Channel to a depth of forty feet. It plots the exact placement of navigational aids, wharves and soundings that defined the modern port. Parramatta, at the head of the river, was the oldest inland settlement in Australia, founded in 1788, and the yellow suburbs stretching toward it show the metropolis spreading west. The Sydney Harbour Bridge was still years from completion, so ferries to places such as Manly carried the north shore's commuters. The sheet therefore captures Sydney in its last years as a city divided by water.
A Sydney family, a former wharf worker or ferry commuter, or a collector of harbor and port plans would find a fitting gift here, perhaps for a retirement or an anniversary. TheMapVault's 1913 view of Sydney Harbour is an earlier view of the same waters, and Robinson's c. 1909 aeroplane map shows only the central city in profile; this 1919 Trust map is the engineer's version, with channels, wharves and depths. It is the most administrative of the three and the best record of how the port was run. Like every print in the collection, it ships unframed and is available in a full range of sizes, from a compact desk piece to a large-format statement print.
