This map of County Mayo was published in 1844 by Samuel Lewis, whose topographical surveys of Ireland remain an important record of the country in the years just before the Great Famine of 1845 to 1852 changed Mayo, and Ireland, forever. It shows the historical boundaries of the county at a moment poised between prosperity and hardship, preserving place names and settlement patterns exactly as they stood in the mid-nineteenth century.
The map records Westport, laid out from 1780 and known for its Georgian architecture, Ballina on the salmon-rich River Moy, and Castlebar, the county town whose origins trace back to 1235. Also shown are Achill Island, the largest island off the Irish coast, the sheltered waters of Clew Bay with Clare Island guarding its mouth, the Nephin Beg mountain range, the coastal town of Newport, Belmullet with its rugged cliffs, and Swinford in the county's interior, along with the boglands now protected within Ballycroy National Park.
A map like this makes a meaningful gift for anyone with Mayo ancestry researching their family history, a housewarming gift for a new home with Irish connections, a birthday or Christmas present for someone who grew up in the county, or a wedding gift for a couple honeymooning along the Wild Atlantic Way. The fine engraved detail of Samuel Lewis's original survey has been carefully restored throughout.
