Florida in 1893 - Jacksonville, Tampa, Miami

Wood Brothers Cash Store of Unadilla, New York handed this map to customers in 1893, part of The Columbian World's Fair Atlas that Chicago cartographer George F. Cram produced to mark that year's World's Fair and the 400th anniversary of Columbus's landing in the Americas.

This Florida map runs at a scale of 1:2,500,000, with county boundaries in hand-applied outline color, plus two insets covering the northwestern portion of the state and the area around Monroe County. Jacksonville, Tampa, and Miami are all marked on the sheet, along with Lake Okeechobee and the Gulf of Mexico coastline, though Miami in 1893 was still little more than a trading post on the Miami River, three years shy of incorporating as a city. Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway was, at the time this map was printed, only just beginning to push its line south past St. Augustine, the development that would eventually turn Florida's east coast into a tourist destination. Greenwich and Washington both appear as prime meridians.
