Mississippi in 1893 - Jackson, Gulfport, Biloxi

George F. Cram's Chicago firm was among the busier American map publishers of the 1890s, and the Columbian World's Fair Atlas was one of its signature projects, ninety state and territory maps produced to mark the 1893 World's Fair and distributed for Wood Brothers Cash Store of Unadilla, New York. This sheet is the Mississippi map from that atlas.

The map renders Mississippi's counties in outline color, with red lines separating each one and a thicker line marking the state's outer border. Isolines are used along the Gulf Coast to suggest depth, including around the Mississippi Sound, and the state's rivers are traced in blue. Cities and towns are labeled at a scale of 1:1,400,000, one of the larger scales used anywhere in the atlas, giving this map a bit more room to show detail than many of its neighbors. Both the Greenwich and Washington prime meridians are referenced, as throughout the rest of the volume.

This print is a good match for a Mississippi family with roots in one of the state's river or coastal counties, a former resident who's since settled elsewhere, or a collector working through Cram's full 1893 state series.
