Montana, Idaho & Wyoming Map 1872 County Print - Helena, Boise, South Pass City

H.H. Lloyd issued this county map of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming on a distinctive horizontal format in 1872, the third and most fully updated state of a plate that had first appeared that same year with only four Wyoming counties and considerably less topographic detail. This later state expands Wyoming to five counties and substantially reworks the cartography around Yellowstone, adding new mountain ranges and county boundaries not present on the earlier printings. Like Lloyd's other territorial maps, this sheet appeared only as a supplement bound into Warner & Beers county atlases of the 1870s, never as a standalone publication, which has made well-preserved examples genuinely scarce today. It stands, by most accounts, among the best and rarest commercial atlas maps of the Northern Rockies region produced during the decade.

Helena continues to anchor Montana Territory as its capital amid a landscape of mining camps and emigrant trails, while Boise performs the same role for Idaho. South Pass City marks one of the region's storied Wyoming gold camps, sitting along the Overland Route to the Gold Fields that the map traces in detail alongside the separate Emigrant Road. Yellowstone itself is located on this plate, though notably the Teton mountains are not yet shown, an omission the map shares with many of its contemporaries. Numerous forts, Indian tribal territories, early railroads and proposed rail lines fill out a landscape still very much in the process of being surveyed and settled.

This later, more detailed state of Lloyd's Montana, Idaho and Wyoming map makes a fitting gift for a collector wanting to compare successive states of the same historic plate, or for a family with roots in the Wyoming gold camps of the early 1870s. Set beside the store's other Lloyd territorial map of the same three-territory region, this horizontal county edition shows a genuinely revised and expanded plate rather than a simple reprint, distinguished by its fifth Wyoming county and reworked Yellowstone cartography. It is available unframed in a full range of sizes, from a compact print for a study to a large-format piece for an office or den.
