Colton with text by Richard Swainson Fisher and published in 1858 in Colton's Illustrated Cabinet Atlas and Descriptive Geography, a modestly sized volume whose maps traded specialist precision for legibility, this particular sheet notable for marking railroad lines across four states at once. The sheet depicts relief with hachures, colors each state's counties individually within an ornamental border, and carries a separate inset detailing the vicinity of Cincinnati, with railroad lines marked across the region, all engraved by Davies and Roberts and George Russell and Co. Published only a few years before the Civil War, the map spans a politically divided stretch of the country running from the free state of Ohio down through the slaveholding states of Kentucky and Tennessee.
