This detailed map of County Cork was compiled by Samuel Lewis and published in 1844 as part of his celebrated topographical survey of Ireland. It captures Ireland's largest county on the very eve of the Great Famine, recording towns, parishes and estates as they stood in the years just before the catastrophic famine of 1845 to 1852 reshaped the region forever, making it a poignant piece of Irish social history as well as a fine cartographic record.

The map ranges from Cork City, the county town, out along the harbour to Cobh and Kinsale, and inland to Blarney Castle and the Fota House estate near Cork Harbour, with Mizen Head marking the county's dramatic southwestern tip. Youghal's medieval core, Midleton with its noted distillery, the planted town of Bandon, and Skibbereen, later associated with some of the worst suffering of the Great Famine, are all recorded, alongside the River Lee and the wild scenery of the Beara Peninsula that defines much of west Cork.

Whether for a housewarming, wedding, retirement, Christmas or milestone anniversary, this map suits anyone with Cork roots or a love of Irish history, and it works equally well as a corporate gift for a Cork-based business. The fine engraved detail of this rare 1844 plate has been carefully restored so every parish boundary and place name remains sharp and legible.
