This finely detailed map of Glasgow was published in 1851 by the Victorian map publishers Tallis and Rapkin, at a time when the city was rapidly expanding into one of the great industrial and mercantile centres of the British Empire. It is a classic example of a mid-Victorian city map, combining precise street-level surveying with a series of decorative vignettes, and it remains a valuable resource for historians and genealogists tracing the growth of Glasgow during this period of explosive change.

The map covers a wide sweep of the city, from the River Clyde in the south to Townhead in the north, and from Laurieston in the west to Calton in the east, with every street, lane and alley individually labelled alongside hundreds of individual buildings. Along the border, decorative vignettes depict the Royal Exchange, Glasgow Cathedral, the Royal Bank of Scotland, the University of Glasgow, a view of the city from Glasgow Green, and one of the bridges over the Clyde, while the nearby Necropolis is also marked as one of the city's most striking Victorian landmarks.

This detailed map makes a wonderful gift for anyone from Glasgow, whether for a housewarming in the city, a wedding gift for a Scottish couple, a retirement present after a career spent in Glasgow, or a Christmas gift for a proud Glaswegian relative. It also suits a corporate gift for a business with Glasgow roots. Every engraved street name, building outline and vignette from the original 1851 map has been carefully restored for this print.
