This delightfully hand-coloured and extremely rare map of Edinburgh and the Lothians was originally published in 1690 by Valk and Schenk, a master mapmaking duo working out of Amsterdam during the late seventeenth century. It offers a detailed snapshot of the region surrounding Scotland's capital just a year after the Williamite Revolution had reshaped the kingdom.

The map extends roughly from Linlithgow in the west to Dunglass in the east, covering what would today be West Lothian, Midlothian and East Lothian in full. Queensferry sits along the Firth of Forth, which dominates the top of the plate with Inverkeithing just visible across the water, while Haddington, Dalkeith and Loanhead are recorded further inland. A wonderfully illuminated Scotland coat of arms decorates the top right corner of the map, adding a fine decorative flourish to this detailed regional survey.

This map makes a thoughtful housewarming, retirement, birthday or Christmas gift for anyone from Edinburgh or the Lothians, as well as a memorable corporate gift for a Scotland-based business. The fine hand-coloured engraving of this 1690 plate has been carefully restored to preserve its original detail and vivid colour.
