This is a rare and exceptional map of London from 1690, created by the Dutch cartographer Joannes de Ram. By this date, London had risen from the ashes of the Great Fire of 1666 and was being methodically rebuilt, with medieval street patterns giving way to the more regular, modernised city that Christopher Wren and other architects were imposing on the damaged fabric.

London spreads across the map with extraordinary detail. The City of London, the ancient walled core, has been rebuilt along more rational lines after the Fire. Westminster, the seat of political power, sits to the west, while Southwark sprawls across the river. The Thames winds through the composition, lined with wharves reflecting London's role as a global trading hub. St Paul's Cathedral, Wren's masterpiece begun in 1675, and the Tower of London anchor the eastern and central city, with St James's Park and other green spaces marked among the newly laid-out streets.

Superb as a birthday, Christmas, Father's Day or housewarming gift for London historians, Stuart period enthusiasts, and genealogists passionate about the City's past.
