Henry Darwin Rogers and Alexander Keith Johnston issued this States of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida sheet in 1857, published in London by Edward Stanford and engraved by W. & A.K. Johnston of Edinburgh, part of their Atlas of the United States. This printing shows all four states and their counties in outline color, with the Bahamas drawn in off Florida's coast for geographic context, four years before the Civil War would begin in Charleston Harbor. The sheet maps South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida jointly, a broad sweep of the antebellum Deep South.

County boundaries are marked across all four states, an administrative layer reflecting the plantation-economy settlement pattern that dominated the region in the 1850s. Rivers, cities, and transportation routes are detailed across the sheet, tracing the corridors that moved cotton and other goods toward the region's Atlantic and Gulf ports.
