Colorado Map 1884 State Print - Denver, Pueblo, Trinidad, Del Norte

O.W. Gray and Frank A. Gray published this map of Colorado in 1884 for the Special Edition of their National Atlas, issued by Stedman & Brown of Philadelphia and enlarged in this printing to a double page format with expanded city detail compared to Gray's earlier Continental Atlas maps. Fully hand painted in color, the sheet reflects Colorado eight years into statehood, its Rocky Mountain interior increasingly opened by rail even as portions of the state remained marked as Indian reservation and public land awaiting settlement. Gray's atlas work drew from the same core map set used across several related Gray publications, refined and enlarged for this special edition. Denver anchors the map's northern Front Range as Colorado's capital and largest commercial center. Pueblo, to the south, continued building its reputation as a steel and rail town, while Trinidad, near the Colorado-New Mexico line, served the state's southern coalfields. Del Norte, in the San Luis Valley along the upper Rio Grande, marks the map's southwestern reach, a region still sparsely settled in 1884. The Rocky Mountains dominate the map's center, with towns and rail lines clustered along the river valleys that made travel through the range possible.

Issued the same decade as the 1879 and 1889 Rand McNally Colorado maps and the 1890 Mitchell edition, all also found in this collection, this 1884 Gray sheet adds a fourth publisher's take on Colorado's fast-moving 1880s, distinguished by its larger double-page format and hand-painted finish.
