This color lithograph map of Denmark, titled Daenemark, was made by Adolph Hartleben and published in Vienna and Leipzig in 1888 to accompany A. Hartleben's Volks-Atlas. G. Freytag and Berndt engraved it. The sheet measures about 34 by 21 centimeters and shows Denmark, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, with the surrounding bodies of water. It carries three insets: the Faroe Islands at the top center at the same scale as the main map, Iceland at the top right at a scale of 1:4,000,000, and a plan of Copenhagen at the bottom right at a scale of 1:150,000. It is a clear and useful sheet for anyone who likes to see a country and its islands together.

A table at the center of the sheet lists the political divisions of the kingdom of Denmark, and the meridian is Greenwich. The main map shows political boundaries, administrative divisions, cities, towns, rivers and transport routes, with the Skagerrak, the Kattegat and the Baltic Sea around them. The atlas contains 72 lithographed maps, hand-colored, in a hundred pages with a complete register, and it was published by the Vienna firm of Hartleben, which was known for its popular atlases. The sheet is an efficient and handsome summary of the kingdom and its distant dependencies. The atlas sold widely in the German-speaking lands of the age.

A collector of German-language atlases, a family with roots in Copenhagen, Iceland or the Faroe Islands, or a lover of maps with insets will find a thoughtful gift here. TheMapVault's Colton map of Denmark from 1856 has similar insets and comes from New York, whereas this Hartleben sheet is from Vienna. Like every print in the collection, it ships unframed and is available in a full range of sizes, from a compact desk piece to a large-format statement print. It also makes a good pairing with other maps of the Danish realm. It will stay a pleasure to look at for many years.
