Georgia & Alabama Map 1874 Regional Print - Atlanta, Savannah, Montgomery, Birmingham

This joint Georgia and Alabama map is part of Asher & Adams' New Commercial, Topographical, and Statistical Atlas and Gazetteer of the United States, published in New York in 1874. Both states were still deep in Reconstruction in this period, their plantation-based cotton economies upended by emancipation and reorganizing around sharecropping and tenant farming, while the railroads shown on this map — many rebuilt from wartime destruction only in the years just before this atlas went to print — were becoming the lifeline connecting cotton country to Northern markets again. Franklin Type Foundry engraved and electrotyped the sheet, hand-colored with relief shown by hachures.

Counties, townships, and rail distances are laid out across both states on a single map, a snapshot of the Deep South's rebuilt transportation network less than a decade after the Civil War's end.
