This Georgia map is part of Thomas G. Bradford's 1838 An Illustrated Atlas, published by Weeks, Jordan & Co. and Wiley and Putnam. 1838 was the year the forced removal of the Cherokee Nation from northern Georgia reached its brutal conclusion — the Trail of Tears, in which thousands of Cherokee people died on the forced march west, was carried out that same year under federal troops, opening the last significant tract of Native land in the state to the cotton planters and settlers already pouring in. George W. Boynton engraved the sheet at a scale of about 1:1,584,000.

Counties are rendered in the atlas's signature pastel hand-applied color, giving the state's political geography a clean, legible finish — a peacetime administrative map published in the very year that some of the darkest events in the state's history were unfolding in its northern counties.
