The Hawaiian Government Survey issued this large-format map of Maui in Washington, based on the primary triangulation conducted by W.D. Alexander and S.E. Bishop and revised and updated to reflect conditions as of 1903, five years after Hawaii's annexation by the United States. The survey's triangulation work, originally undertaken in the 1880s under the Hawaiian Kingdom, provided the geodetic backbone for nearly all subsequent detailed mapping of the islands, and this later revision represents one of the most thoroughly surveyed maps of Maui produced during the entire nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. By 1903 Maui had settled into its status as an American territory, its land tenure system still bearing the marks of the Hawaiian Kingdom's mid-century land reforms even as new American administrative structures took hold.

Extensive topographical and geographical detail covers the island, from the volcanic slopes of Haleakala down to its coastal plains and harbors, reflecting the precision the original triangulation survey made possible. Lahaina, the historic former capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, anchors the island's western coast, Wailuku serves as Maui's county seat in the central valley between its two volcanic massifs, and Kahului marks the growing port town that would soon become the island's principal commercial harbor. This revised 1903 edition offers a genuinely updated snapshot of Maui's geography under early American territorial administration, distinct from the earlier 1885 issue of the same base survey.
