New York City Map 1874 City Plan - Manhattan, Brooklyn, Central Park

Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr. issued this plan of New York and Brooklyn in 1874 as plate 18 of Mitchell's New General Atlas, engraved by W.H. Gamble with contributions from the U.S. Coast Survey and W. Williams, the same edition that introduced the firm's large-format Kansas and Nebraska map. The plate is hand-colored within Mitchell's signature ornate floral border, with pastel tones separating the two cities' districts at a scale of roughly one to twenty-nine thousand, and it includes a separate inset detailing the northern portion of New York City and County, extending the plan's usefulness into areas too dense to render clearly on the main sheet. By 1874, New York was consolidating its position as the nation's commercial capital while Brooklyn remained a large, independent city in its own right, not yet absorbed into Greater New York, a political arrangement this plan records just as it stood.

The Hudson River defines the plan's western edge, the great commercial artery that had made New York the busiest port in the country, while the East River separates Manhattan from Brooklyn, both waterways rendered with the careful detail Mitchell's engravers applied throughout the atlas. Railroads, roads, and canals are marked across both cities, a dense infrastructure network reflecting how thoroughly New York and Brooklyn's economies had become intertwined even while remaining politically separate. Major public buildings are noted throughout the built-up grid, fixed civic landmarks around which the surrounding streets had grown. The inset of northern New York City and County extends the plan's coverage further up Manhattan Island, capturing areas still only lightly developed in 1874 but already platted for the city's continued northward growth.

This plan is a fitting gift for a New York or Brooklyn family, someone whose ancestors crossed between the two cities before consolidation, or a collector interested in New York cartography from the pre-Greater New York era.
