New York Map 1883 State Print - New York City, Brooklyn, Albany

This New York map comes from Cram's Unrivaled Family Atlas of the World, copyrighted 1883 by George Franklin Cram and published in Chicago by A.C. Shewey and Co. It belongs to the first edition of Cram's first "mass production" world atlas, sixty-five maps produced to bring detailed geography within reach of a broad American readership.

Printed in full or outline color at a scale of about 1:1,341,120, with relief in hachures, the sheet carries a dedicated inset covering Long Island and the vicinity of New York City, giving that urban corridor its own close-up treatment apart from the rest of the state. The map marks Lake Ontario and Lake Erie along New York's borders and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, along with the railroads and roads threading through the state. Both Greenwich and Washington prime meridians appear on the map.
