Ohio Map 1838 State Print - Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland

This Ohio map comes from Thomas G. Bradford's 1838 An Illustrated Atlas, printed by Weeks, Jordan & Co. and Wiley and Putnam. By 1838, Ohio had a decade-old head start on most of its western neighbors thanks to the Ohio and Erie Canal, completed in 1832, which had already turned Cincinnati into the largest city in the West — nicknamed "Porkopolis" for its booming meatpacking trade — and given the state's farmers a direct water route to the Gulf of Mexico via the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The map is printed at a scale of roughly 1:1,480,000, with Lake Erie forming the state's northern boundary and Kentucky and Canada visible along its edges.

Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland are all named directly on the map, anchoring the state's three major regions in the atlas's signature hand-applied color — a state whose canal-driven prosperity in this decade put it well ahead of Indiana and Illinois next door.
