Based on one of the finest surviving examples of this extraordinarily rare map, our restoration reveals Saxton's masterful engraving with remarkable clarity. Originally hand-coloured, the map showcases hundreds of place names from major ports to small villages, capturing the southwest as the Elizabethans knew it.
The map brims with authentic Cornish character: Penzance, St Ives, Plymouth, Lands End, Padstow, and St Michael's Mount all feature prominently. Lizard Point juts dramatically into the Atlantic. An ornate engraving of Launceston graces the top left, hinting at its former importance as Cornwall's capital. Inland settlements pepper the landscape, many recognisable by modern names, others fascinating in archaic spellings.
