Old Map of Dublin in 1836 by W.B. Clarke - River Liffey, Leinster, County Dublin

The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge commissioned this plan of Dublin from William Barnard Clarke, an architect and cartographer who produced several city plans for the Society alongside maps of Milan, Warsaw and Paris. Engraved by E. Turrell and published in London by Baldwin and Cradock in 1836, the map formed part of the Society's wider effort to bring affordable, accurate reference material to a general readership during the 1830s.

The River Liffey runs through the centre of the plan, crossed by the bridges that linked the city's northern and southern halves, with Trinity College, Dublin Castle and the Custom House all marked along its banks. Sackville Street, not yet renamed O'Connell Street, is shown as the city's principal thoroughfare, and Phoenix Park is laid out to the west on the river's northern side. Beyond the city itself, the map situates Dublin within County Dublin and the wider province of Leinster, showing the roads that connected the capital to the rest of Ireland.

Produced a decade before the Great Famine reshaped Ireland's cities and countryside alike, this plan captures Dublin at a settled moment in its Georgian development, and makes a meaningful gift for anyone with Dublin roots or a soft spot for the city's Georgian streets.
