Old OS Map of Glasgow and Clyde in 1901 by Bartholomew - Loch Lomond, Firth of Clyde, Trossachs

John Bartholomew and Son published this half-inch map of Glasgow and the Firth of Clyde in 1901, part of the layered-relief series that made the Edinburgh firm the standard mapmaker for Scottish travellers throughout the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Rather than a city street plan, this sheet takes in the whole region around Glasgow, stretching from the industrial heart of the Clyde out to the lochs and hills that drew day-trippers out of the city.

Starting at Glasgow and the shipbuilding towns lining the Clyde estuary, the map reaches out to Loch Lomond and the rugged summits of the Arrochar Alps, taking in the Trossachs, Dumbarton Castle perched on its volcanic rock above the river, and the resort towns strung along the Firth such as Helensburgh, Gourock, and Rothesay. Bartholomew's signature hachured relief shading gives the hills and glens real depth, while railway lines, steamer routes, and roads are all marked in fine detail, showing how Glaswegians and visitors travelled out to the lochs and coast for leisure at the turn of the twentieth century. The map captures a Glasgow balancing its industrial rise against Scotland's fast-growing tourist trade.
