Tennessee Map 1838 State Print - Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville

This Tennessee map belongs to Thomas G. Bradford's 1838 An Illustrated Atlas, published by Weeks, Jordan & Co. and Wiley and Putnam. Tennessee in 1838 was still very much Jacksonian country — Andrew Jackson himself had only left the presidency the year before, retiring to his Hermitage plantation outside Nashville, and the political culture he'd built around frontier populism and states' rights still dominated the state. Tennessee also served as a staging ground that same year for the forced removal of the Cherokee from neighboring Georgia and North Carolina, with several of the Trail of Tears routes passing directly through the state. George W. Boynton engraved the sheet at a scale of roughly 1:2,000,000.

The Mississippi River forms the state's western border while the Tennessee River winds through the interior, both laid across county boundaries hand-colored in period style — the two rivers that, between them, shaped nearly every major settlement pattern in the state.
