This detailed early-twentieth-century pocket map of Stockholm, titled Axel Gillberg's Plan over Stockholm, was published in Stockholm by Axel Gillberg around 1920. The map is drawn in a style typical of the era, with a focus on the urban grid and major landmarks, and central Stockholm is prominently detailed, with its streets, blocks and parks easily discernible. The map also includes an inset that gives a closer treatment to an area of particular interest. It was made for walking, and its layout is a clear guide to how the Swedish capital was organized in the years after the First World War. It is a useful sheet for anyone interested in how the capital was laid out in the early twentieth century, and it is full of fine detail in its streets and parks.

A second map shows a portion of the city and highlights the area known as Engelbrekts Forsamling and parts of Norra Djurgarden, with a detailed layout of streets, buildings and natural features such as bodies of water and parklands. Norra Djurgarden was historically known for its parklands and royal hunting grounds. The map predates the extensive urban development that would come later in the century. It also shows the waterways that are an integral part of the geography of the city, which is often called the Venice of the North because of its many bridges and canals.

A traveler who has walked Stockholm, a family with roots in Sweden, or a collector of twentieth-century city plans will find a pleasing gift here. TheMapVault's Homann plan of 1720 and Merian view of 1638 show the old city, whereas this Gillberg plan shows it in the modern age. Like every print in the collection, it ships unframed and is available in a full range of sizes, from a compact desk piece to a large-format statement print. It would suit a study, a hall or a library.
