This is an elegant map of Surrey from John Speed's 1611 atlas "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine." Surrey, a county in the Home Counties immediately south of London, is captured here with Speed's characteristic precision, remaining in the early seventeenth century a distinct county of farms, forests, and market towns.

Guildford, Surrey's county town, sits prominently along the River Wey. Kingston upon Thames appears where Surrey meets London and the Thames, and Croydon is marked as a settlement that would later expand with the capital. Reigate and Dorking sit along the fertile Vale of Holmesdale below the North Downs, Leatherhead appears along the River Mole, and Farnham is marked to the west, with the North Downs and South Downs cutting across the map alongside the Thames, Wey, and Mole rivers.

Perfect as a birthday, Christmas, Father's Day or housewarming gift for Surrey residents, Home Counties history enthusiasts, and genealogists.
