This full-colour map of Wiltshire was created by John Speed and engraved by Jodocus Hondius, first published in 1611 as part of Speed's landmark work "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine." It remains one of the finest and most detailed depictions of this ancient county from the period, framed by decorative engravings in the top corners - Salisbury, then as now the county town, sits in one corner, while a lively scene of Stonehenge with well-dressed figures wandering among the stones fills the other.

Many of Wiltshire's towns and villages are already recorded here, albeit in their Early Modern English spellings. Look out for Swindon, Salisbury, Trowbridge, Chippenham, Melksham, Devizes, Warminster, Calne, Westbury, Corsham, Wroughton, Wootton Bassett, Amesbury, Tidworth, Bradford-upon-Avon and Marlborough among many more - a lovely chance to spot your own Wiltshire hometown on a map over four hundred years old.

Rich in colour and history, this map makes a wonderful birthday, Christmas or housewarming gift for anyone from Wiltshire, or anyone who holds Salisbury Plain and its surrounding towns close to their heart.
